BibleXpres 1.6 bug round up

Howdy folks,
Thanks to the help of a particularly verbose user, I have identified, the “blank page” bug as being related to selected scripture. When you have some verses selected and then move to another chapter or another book, if the new chapter does not have as many verses as the ones you had selected, the chapter will display blank. I have fixed this bug in BibleXpress 1.6.1, which I will be testing in church tomorrow morning. You can fix this problem by deselecting any scripture before changing chapters. ( Even if I uploaded tonight, Apple wouldn’t get it to you until later this week.)

Also, 1.6 does not launch in “upside down portrait mode” properly, and that is fixed in 1.6.1 as well.

In 1.6, the verse notes view is shown regardless of whether it was visible the last time you used BibleXpress; that is fixed as well.

Also, when launching in landscape mode, the scripture area is too wide; also fixed in 1.6.1

And lastly, the verse index overlaps the “Footnotes” button in the iPhone version. This is not a “button” it’s an indicator that you can swipe horizontally to get to the footnotes, but some users wanted to be able to tap the indicator that then takes you back to the verse notes. (Moot in the iPad version, because footnotes are displayed in the margin). This is the intended functionality, but it seems it’s not the “user expected” functionality. The argument comes down to how precise you want the verse index to be, I can make the verse index shorter when verse notes are display. And I will.

Bug fix for The Message 1 Corinthians 11

At 10:04 AM Central Time this morning. I got an e-mail saying that in The Message, 1 Corinthians 11 actually contained 1 Corinthians 10. The bug has been fixed. As of 11:20 AM, you can download the bug fix.

Instructions:
1. Make sure you have BibleXpress 1.5.3 update. (I would say 1.6, but Apple hasn’t approved it yet!)
1.	Make sure you have a stable internet connection, such as WiFi. You will need to download about 3.5 MB.
2.	From the “Scripture” tab, tap the reference button (the big button at the top of the screen.
3.	Then tap the “+” button in the upper-right hand corner. BibleXpress will go to my web page and looked for available translations, of which one will be “Bug Fix.”

1.	Tap “Bug Fix” and one entry will be “The Message.”
2. Tap “The Message” and BibleXpress will get a little more information from the webpage and display details about the bug fix.

1. Then tap the “Download” button.

1. BibleXpress will ask you to confirm the download. Tap “Download.”

1. Wait for the download.
2. I recommend that once the download completes that you quit BibleXpress by pressing the Home button, then starting the application again.
3. If it worked, 1 Corinthians 11 in “TM” will begins “To Honor God...”

How does this work? BibleXpress already contains a mechanism for downloading free translations. When a downloaded translation has the same name as a built-in translation, BibleXpress uses the download instead; effectively allowing me to “fix bugs.” If and when Apple ever approves the 1.6 update, this bug fix will still be in place, since, at the moment, that version still has the bug. Since the bug fix uses up extra space in your iPhone, I will post an update to BibleXpress once Apple approves version 1.6.

Many thanks to Tim for the heads up on the bug.

While recording the BibleXpress 1.6 tutorial video tonight... last night... ok, It’s 1 in the morning so I’m not sure how exactly I refer to what I was doing three hours ago.

Anyway, I found a bug in the indexed search, which to my horror, appears to be in both the 1.5.1 and the 1.5.3 updates. You can turn the index search off in the advanced search mode and use the original search engine. That old rock solid search engine will still work right...

Fortunately, I was able to fix it... after a couple of hours of work, and it’ll be fixed in the 1.6 update, which I thought was done already. Just so you know, that index search code has 1819 lines of code. One was wrong.

Verse notes in BibleXpress 1.5.1 and earlier do not work in iPhone OS 3

If you upgrade to iPhone OS 3 before BibleXpress 1.5.3 is released, the verse note function will cease to function properly, and you will lose your verse notes.

I have coded an update to fix the problem and submitted it to Apple, but it is unlikely that Apple will make it available to you before Wednesday, when OS 3 becomes available.

The 1.5.3 update will cause the verse notes function to work normally in iPhone OS 3, but will not leverage any of the yet-to-be-announced features in BibleXpress 1.6 which will leverage the iPhone OS 3 new features, within the next few weeks.

Look for some exciting announcements in the weeks to come.

Update 6/20/09 - Apple has rejected the update without explanation. I will try to find out more ASAP.

Multi-lingual selection, ESV subheadings

In BibleXpress 1.5, in the ESV, in subheadings, the word “Lord” is missing when it is in small caps. This bug is corrected in BibleXpress 1.5.1. It should become available approximately a week from today.

1.5.1 corrects a bug in which translation bug fix downloads are not recognized.

1.5.1 corrects behavior in which a user’s selected verses are not kept selected when changing to a translation in which the book name is spelled differently.

1.5.1 also lists the type of translation in the “Installed” tab in the Translation Downloader. The type is either “Built-in”, “Downloaded”, or “Bug Fix”. As yet, there are no “bug-fix” translations, but if there are, it is recommended that you stop the application after deleting one before continuing. If you don’t, it’ll probably crash anyway...
